Property Description

A Georgian Manor House Circa 1740s located near Valley Forge and recognized as one of the oldest Georgian style homes in Chester County. Rich in Revolutionary War history, Moore Hall is a stately stone mansion on 13 plus acres near Valley Forge Park. This National Historic Register property served as officers quarters during the Revolution and in the 1800s, a stop on the Underground Railroad.
Because five miles separated this historic site from the Encampment of the soldiers, it was it not included in the 1430 acres set apart in 1893 as Valley Forge Park. George Washington was here! In 1778, Moore Hall was the meeting place of a joint sub-committee of Congress. It was here that George Washington stood to defend himself against allegations that he was not competent to lead the American forces.
The house demonstrates the typical five bay center-hall, two-floor plan of Georgian architecture. The center hall is divided into a front hall and a stair hall by two fluted Doric pilasters. Most of the interior detailing is original with high ceilings, deep crown moldings, chair rail, paneled window, deep windowsills, random width floors and doorways with eared architraves. Off the center hall is the formal dining room featuring a carved marble fireplace centered in a paneled wall a unique cabinet with arched heads and keystones above both the cabinet and symmetrical door on the other side of the fireplace. On the opposite side of the center hall is a large living room with a marble fireplace, built-in cabinets, and shelves, four large windows, chair rail and magnificent crown moldings. From the formal living space, two French doors lead to the relaxing sunroom with a ceiling made from original barn beams. It is a perfect place to relax and enjoy this peaceful country setting! Just across the hall is a comfortable den with a fireplace housing a Vermont Stove, perfect for those cold winter nights. The breakfast area, kitchen with stainless refrigerator, range and Bosch dishwasher connect to the den/sitting room. The standalone kitchen house was connected to the main house in the late 1800s and contains another large fireplace, an entrance from the rear porch, another outside entrance to the front of the kitchen house, a large laundry room and powder room. Once used as quarters for help, a separate stairway leads to the second floor of the kitchen house offering an additional bedroom, bonus space or office. Just off the large hall on the second floor are four large bright bedrooms, all with chair rail and crown molding, original wide plank flooring and a full bath. An additional full bath with tub and shower sits connects two bedrooms on the East side of the house. One more level, the third floor, contains three more bedrooms, office, play or bonus space, a full bath with shower, a large cedar closet and lots of extra out of sight storage.
To the West of the main house is an old stone carriage house in need of repair and restoration. As the new owner of historic Moore Hall, you can choose to restore this large structure, convert to garage, or remove it. There are lots of options to consider!
Surrounded by trees, and nature, Moore Hall is secluded, peaceful and private. Enjoy the serenity and the convenience of easy access to Philadelphia, major highways, shopping, parks, trails, and recreation . And don't forget to spend time exploring the unique shops, breweries, and restaurants of downtown Phoenixville!
